Decrease stress by saying No

The ability to say No to some of the requests we are faced with daily could be a more valuable skill than ever before, in this current climate of fast paced work and home life. Do you feel you can’t say No because you will be letting people down, missing out on work or social opportunities, or you worry about the consequences?

Judging by the amount of people I come across who are overly stressed, or just don’t have time for themselves, perhaps there are too many of us saying Yes, when our health would benefit greatly from saying No.

To recap on something I blogged about a few weeks ago, having too much stress in one’s life leads to over production of stress hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline, which promote fat storage in the body. Attempting to lose body fat when you are very stressed can be counterproductive, as dietary restriction and heavy exercise are forms of bodily stress, compounding the problem. It is vital to address one’s stress to manageable, controlled levels thereby encouraging the body to mobilise fat rather than store it.

Reading Psychologies magazine recently a few things stuck in my brain regarding just saying No.

  • Just saying No can free up more of your time for the things you would rather be doing, like relaxing, being with family and friends or exercise. This is turn may reduce overwhelming stress that comes with trying to do too many things or pleasing other people.
  • Saying No can feel scary at first, as one might be concerned about the feelings or judgment of others. Maybe it is time, though, to put yourself first. Saying No can feel liberating and leave you more in control of your life.
  • Saying No, I don’t have time, I can’t afford it, or I don’t want to, without guilt or anxiety will become easier the more you practise it. Value yourself as much as you value other people’s opinions about you. The people who care about you only want what’s best for you.

Start saying No today and reap the rewards of having some space in your life for enlivening pursuits such as meditation, solitude, breathing exercise, listening to music, reading a book, or whatever else brings you peace and strength.
